Be_Afraid_Now

Three recently graduated video-artists Sander Houtkruijer, Rik Mohlmann and Jasper Smit started a recedency in Kunsthuis Syb to experiment with suspence techniques from sampled cinema and their own materials. During Be_Afraid_Now the technical aspects of dramatic tension were brought to an ubsurdistic level to explore the boudaries of this visual language. An archive of suspencefull audio- and videosamples was exploited to isolate, deconstruct or reconstruct their influence.

‘Slowing down, hiding, zooming in are typical examples of suspencetechniques. We also want to take a closer look at the role of sound on suspence. If it is true that most films lose their suspence without sound, we wonder if it is possible to add suspence to pictures which are totaly different. And if this is true, where does this process stop? How exchangeble are these suspence techniques?’

This project was supported by Mondriaanstichting and Provincie Fryslân.
